Bush- TPP

BUSH (TPP):
Date 15th-17th February
Trip name/ Location Styx-Arahua
Group members Rees Hillock, Hugo Reid, Logan Froriep, Jacob Willet, Jeremy Black, Jono Irvine, Tim Read, Zak Shaw
Duration of the activity 3 Full Days
Weather Conditions Mostly sunny
Variations in environmental conditions N/A
Route/River conditions and if they changed over the days N/A
Incidents/Injuries Jeremy twisted his knee on the second day and continued the trip at a slower pace; fortunately his injury did not hinder his ability to walk in a major way. He used a stick for support, which was especially helpful whilst walking down-hill. As a group we supported Jeremy as best as we could; half of the group walked at a moderate pace with him and took breaks when necessary. Jeremy’s injury didn’t hold us back as he did very well at soldiering on despite his physical condition.

Learning and highlights The Styx-Arahua trip was not only an ideal way to break in my new  boots it also faced me with my first ever river crossing in a tramping situation. It was exciting to learn about and execute a safe and effective way to cross the river in a group. This occurred on the first day of the tramp at the Styx River. We split into groups of three, and wraps our arms around each others backs, behind one another’s packs. This proved to be a stable form of support as the strongest member of the group was upstream, with the smallest, or not as able/ most confident person in the middle. I learnt that whoever the stronger members of the group are should be on the outside of the line.
Being the only female in my group was no set-back at all. I thoroughly enjoyed the tramp and the great weather. Seeing the cess-pit was an incredible inspiration in regard to the Kayaking world and was most definitely the highlight of my trip. Overall, I found the tramp was a great way to get to know people better and explore a new corner of the country.
